Vigils Planned For Man Beaten, Killed By Mob
Vigils are planned in several Iowa cities on Thursday in memory of a man beaten to death by a mob in Waterloo early Friday.
Police said Marcellus Andrews, 19, was kicked and punched by the group Friday morning along a Waterloo street. He was taken to an Iowa City hospital with severe head injuries, where he died Sunday.
No arrests have been made in the beating.
Witnesses told the Waterloo Courier newspaper that they believe the attack was because of Andrews sexual orientation and that they heard anti-gay slurs during the attack.
Police said it’s unclear how many people were in the mob or why Andrews was targeted. They said their investigation is continuing.
